makes me home sick. i grew up in Soda, and couldn't wait to get out. now I think back, and realize just what a great place it was to spend my childhood. in a lot of ways, i miss it. I wonder if I could ever go back.

So glad you went to Sucre! It's probably the most impressive sweet shops I've been to in the U.S.

Kristin, agreed on the ribs: ruined me!

I lived in the South for 17 years- eight in Atlanta then nine in downtown Memphis where I lived a block off of Beale St. This gave gave me a great jumping off spot to check out all the local spots.

It was a great experience. And during the annual Memphis in May World BBQ Competition, the riverside filled with wonderful porcine smoke!

Cheers,
Timo

PS: I do need to break all my PNW friends of referring to their their grilling or cookouts as "BBQ" ;^)

I'm so happy to have discovered your blog, and your tweets. I'll be driving across country from Sacramento CA to Raleigh NC (leaving at the end of May) and taking 10 days or so to do it. Like you, I'll be looking for good local food, and I'm planning my trip segments so that at the end of each drive I'll be at a good brewpub or brewery. Your advice in this post is really good and reminds me to download the lastest Garmin updates.

Right now I'm planning to go through northern NV, UT, southern WY and then south to Ft Collins (New Belgium Brewing) in CO, east from Denver, across KS, MO, into KY and then NC. I'm @DeirdreReid on twitter and will definitely be tweeting and blogging as I go. Looking forward to hearing about your bourbon adventures!

I LOVE that you are doing this! I too love to eat and travel and have considered doing something like this but never actually gone and done it! I'm catching up on all your posts and I love them! I just found your blog today (courtesy of Steph, of backinskinnyjeans) and the first post I read was in New Orleans. My family is all from New Orleans and though I am the only true Californian in the family, New Orleans holds a special place in my heart and yes, I too loved Anne Rice novels! Good luck on the rest of your trip! I can't wait to read more. On my next trip North I am looking up the falafel drive in!

I'm so glad you discovered the great food in Shreveport! Our mutual friend Kevin C. just directed me to your site so I thought I would check it out. I'm from NY but we lived in Shreveport a few years ago and it is awesome to see someone who appreciates the local places instead of the chains, we have the same attitude. We live in Texas now and if you are ever in the Abilene area you have to try Perini's Ranch in Buffalo Gap, truly incredible steaks. Happy travels and good eating!
